Where to stay in Cantabria to be close to everything?

The west (San Vicente de la Barquera, Comillas, Potes). The base for the Picos de Europa, Gaudí's Capricho and the Oyambre beaches. If that is your trip, stay there: from the eastern coast, Fuente Dé is well over two hours away and the day goes on the road.

Santander and the bay. The base for a city trip: Centro Botín, El Sardinero, La Magdalena, and Somo across the bay by boat. If you are not hiring a car, this is the only base that works, because everything else in Cantabria is reached by car.

The east (Santoña, Laredo, Noja, Bárcena de Cicero). Four beaches under half an hour away, the Marismas nature park, and the two big cities of the north — Bilbao and Santander — each under an hour from the same bed. It is the base that saves the most kilometres if the plan is beach, marshes and day trips.

All of this is there and back in the same day, without packing again. The first figure is from Beranga; the second, from Treto.

And what doesn't: if your trip is the Picos de Europa, don't stay here

None of the other pages in this search will tell you this, because almost all of them take a commission on the booking and do not care where you sleep. Here we charge per night in two specific homes, so it pays to be honest: there are trips for which the eastern coast is a poor base.

If your must-see list has three or more places in the west, sleep there. And if it is half and half, the honest answer is to split the trip between two bases — which is also what the guides in this same search recommend.

And without a car: both homes have a station next door

This is something no booking site mentions, because they don't know it. Both homes are less than three hundred metres from a station on the narrow-gauge line Santander–Bilbao, served by Renfe regional trains. It is not a commuter line, and it runs inland: it does not stop at Santoña, Laredo, Noja or any beach. It gets you to Santander or Bilbao without a car, not around the coast.

Measured in a straight line on OpenStreetMap from each home's front door, not from the village centre.

We do not publish timetables or frequencies because we have not checked them, and a wrong timetable leaves you stranded on a platform. Look them up on renfe.com (Beranga and Treto stations) before relying on the train. By car you can reach everything on this page; without one, a lot less.

Bilbao fifty minutes away and Santander twenty-seven

No other base in Cantabria offers this all at once: two cities and two airports from the same bed, with the A-8 motorway a minute from the door.

• Santander airport 24 min / 30 min.

Note that the two figures are not interchangeable: Treto is closer to Bilbao and Laredo, and Beranga closer to Santander and Noja. That is why there are two homes.

The two homes, and who each one is for

Both sleep two. There is no extra room, sofa bed or cot: they are for couples, two friends or solo travellers. If you are three or more, or coming with children or a dog, this is not the page for you, and I would rather tell you now than when you are already writing to us.

How many nights?

Two nights gives you time for a beach and Santoña or Laredo. With four, Santander or Bilbao fit in without rushing. From seven nights is when a base really pays off: the driving days end and the mornings of walking out for bread begin.

What you ask us before booking

Do I need a car?

To make the most of the area, yes: everything on this page is counted in minutes by car and both homes are in villages right by the A-8. But both have a train station less than three hundred metres away, so you can arrive without a car; getting around the area without one is much harder.

Can I walk to the beach?

No. The nearest is 10 min by car from Treto and 13 min from Beranga. If you want the sand on foot you need to sleep in Laredo, Noja or Berria, and in summer that costs quite a bit more.

Can I see all of Cantabria from here?

All of it, no. The west and the Picos are too far to do calmly; it is set out above, with the minutes.

How many people does it sleep?

Two people in each home. No more guests than those booked are allowed.

How long from the airport?

From Bilbao, 51 min to Treto and 58 min to Beranga. From Santander, 24 min and 30 min. Entry is by keypad lock, so your flight time doesn't matter.
